Why Windows Subsystem Process Terminated Unexpectedly?

Posted by: Chyne on: March 20, 2009

Today when I came to the office and started my PC, my computer suddenly stopped working and turned into a blue screen with the following message code (the message might not accurately coded as below):

FATAL SYSTEM ERROR
The windows Subsystem process terminated unexpectedly with status of oxc0000005(0×77e6107d 0×00f8e1d0)

I can’t really recall the exact message code but it does stated sort of  ‘Heap Space Memory Complete’ and also asking me to contact the administrator for further assistance.

I tried to reboot several times but everytime when I successfully login to the Windows, after several minutes, it will stopped working and turned into a blue screen. I tried with booting in Safe Mode (F8 key) and also with ‘Last Known Good Configuration’ but it still doesn’t work.

What is the first workaround that you can try when facing this situation? My colleague did a screenshot of the message code and booted the PC in the Safe Mode (F8). Then, he made a quick search about the message code in the Google. I really never thought about this solution. Well, I’m really lack of experience of facing this kind of problem.

Cause and Solution
Yes. A quick search in Google helps a lot. What we had for the search result about this issue so far is related to the installation of third-party program. It reminded me of installing Freebie Notes yesterday afternoon. So, what I did was to remove the program when I access my Windows in the Safe Mode. Guess what? It works. I have no problem with my computer at all for the whole day.

Root of the Problem
Why third-party programs cause such problem? In fact, I’m a bit surprised that the program causes such problem because I had been installing this program in my previous workplaces for several times and even in my personal laptop as well. Everything is working fine. I still don’t understand why it doesn’t work well this time.

I found a Microsoft KB on How to troubleshoot a “STOP 0xC000021A” error which explains some of the reasons that causing such failure and also the proper solution to resolve this problem. As for my case, the most obvious of the root cause definitely is the ‘An incompatible third-party program has been installed’.

Your site was extremely interesting, especially since I was searching for thoughts on this subject last Thursday.

Im sure many of you are like me and one of the first things you do in the morning is head here and check out the new post. Along with seeing the new posts, I’m also always checking out the blog roll rss feed and watching them grow, or shrink sometimes. In one of my past …but all in all excellent site. Keep it up!

Just wanted to drop you a line to say, I enjoy reading your site. I thought about starting a blog myself but don’t have the time.
Oh well maybe one day…. :)

Friday’s Java Snack

In Java, "thread" means:

  • An instance of class java.lang.Thread
  • A thread of execution

An instance of Thread is just an object that has variables and methods, and lives and dies on the heap.

A thread of execution is an individual process that has its own call stack (one thread per call stack).
